About NLLC

Mission and Vision:   The NLLC mission is to foster intellectual and personal growth through activities that encircle the social, physical, intellectual, communicative, and emotional (SPICE) domains of learning and becoming. Its vision is that with basic personal autonomy, appropriate future aspirations, and positive participation in society, all deaf young people can compete on equal terms with any successful hearing peers.

Program Activities:   The NLLC activities are geared to the basic fundamentals of the concept of the book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective TEENS,” authored by Sean Covey.  The skills mastered in these activities are utilized to help campers maximize their potential.  They are trained to appreciate the power of literacy, empowerment, attitude, discipline, excellence, resourcefulness, stamina, humility, initiative, and perseverance as  resources in the youngsters’ effort to become all that is in them to be.


Note:  Program-closing awards and recognition dinner is scheduled for Friday, July 20th, at 5:30 pm on the New Mexico School for the Deaf (NMSD) campus.  This is a predominantly student-run, student-managed affair and the general public is invited to attend at the cost of $8.00 per plate for adults and $5.00 for children under 12. Dress is informal. All campers will wear souvenir NLLC t-shirts.

Educational Field Trips:   Currently in the planning stage.

Camper Application: 2012 NLLC program is created to serve the needs and interests of teenagers currently in 7-12 grades; There will be 48 campers, 24 boys and 24 girls, with good academic standing and leadership potential. Three letters of recommendation, one each from school counselor or athletic coach, academic teacher or dormitory counselor, and prominent community leader or state association of the deaf officer are requested. Admission is on a first come, first served basis with all of the paperwork completed and submitted, along with a deposit check of $100, payable to CSD/NLLC, to reserve the space and mailed to:

Note:   The program is limited to students presently in grades 7 through 12.  On March 1, 2012, space permitting, outstanding students in the 6th and 7th grades may be considered.

Spending Money: Recoommended amount of spending money per camper for purchase of cantee, souvenir and other typical camp items is $100 to $150. checks are to be mailed to:

Purchases on and off campus will be subtracted from campers' accounts so as to ensure the safety of their funds. Possession of significant cash on campus is not encouraged.

Employment Application:   Opportunities for employment are open to anyone , deaf or otherwise, with fluent ASL skills and with career aspirations in the area of deafness and hearing loss. The following positions are available: Literacy Program Coordinator; Newsletter Program Coordinator; Recreation/Waterfront Program Coordinator; Dean of Boys; Dean of Girls; Boys Counselors (3); Girls Counselors (3); Hospitality Coordinator; and Evening Program Coordinator. All applicants are required to have first aid and CPR certificates prior to participating in the program.

Note:   All applicants must be at least 18 years old and fluent in the use of ASL. These positions are expected to be filled by March 1, 2012.

Transportation:   Campers flying in arrive at the Albuquerque International Airport anytime after 10:00am and before 5:00pm on Saturday, July 7th, and depart any time between 8 a.m. and 12 noon Wednesday, July 25th from the airport.  Transportation from the Albuguerque airport to the New Mexico School for the Deaf campus on July 7th and from the California School for the Deaf campus to the Ontario Regional airport on July 25th both will be provided.   

Housing:   Campers and staff are housed in the NMSD cottages with their own sleeping bags and essential bath items.

Laundry:   Campers will have laundry day once a week on the NMSD campus so they are asked to pack their baggage only what is needed for a week. They are encouraged to bring along just one baggage when they travel to Sante Fe.

 Staff Training:   Staff of 14-16 members flying or driving in are expected to be on the NMSD campus, Wednesday, July 4th, anytime between 12 noon and 6:00pm.  Pizza dinner will be served and a brief housekeeping meeting follows. Meal times, beginning the next day, July 5th, are 8:00 for breakfast, 12 noon for lunch and 6:00 for dinner.  Full-scale training is from 9:00 to 4:00, both Thursday, July 5th and Friday, July 6th.

Communication:  Throughout the camp session, pagers are used only when absolutely necessary so as to not interfere with valuable learning and becoming experiences. The NLLC program is dedicated to young adults and the activities teach them the real life tools so necessary for success in their future as positive and self-supporting adults.
